Grade 1's blog

Week of March 6 - 10

 Hello Grade One Families!

Only one week until Spring Break! It is snowing at our house right now, but the calendar assures us that spring is just around the corner! As Msgr. Luterbach explained to the students on Ash Wednesday, the word "Lent" actually means springtime so we are excited to see our world wake up and shake off its winter sleep soon!

This is the first full week of Lent. We invite everyone to join us at 8:15am Mass. It was wonderful to see some Grade One students at Mass last week. Thank-you for making the effort to be at school a bit earlier! In the classroom we have been learning that the forty days of Lent are a time of changing our hearts to be more like Jesus. This week we will focus on prayer as a way of drawing us closer to the Lord.

Please note the following for this week:

 Monday March 6

  • PE class
  • Fukuroku hot lunch for those who ordered
  • Monday sharing group

Tuesday March 7-Science World Field Trip!

  • bring a morning snack in a disposable bag/wrapper in child's coat pocket
  • bring a lunch in either a Ziploc bag or a paper bag clearly labelled with the student's name; all food containers must be disposable as we will not be bringing anything back with us; no backpacks are needed
  • please leave agenda books, sharing, and home reading books at home
  • we will take the bus back to school - leaving Science World at 2:00pm
  • regular dismissal from the covered area at 3:00pm

 Wednesday March 8

  • PE class

 Thursday March 9

  • last day to return library books

Please contact me at nkelly@stpaulschool.ca if you have any questions or concerns.

I hope that you all have a wonderful week ahead and a very enjoyable Spring Break! School will resume with 8:15am Mass on Monday March 27, 2017.

School children are invited to sit at the front of the church during these morning Masses. Week of February 20 - 24

 Hello Grade One Families!

What a busy week we had in Grade One last week! The students are showing so much development in their desire to work independently and share their knowledge with each other. This week they will work in small groups to create their own community. Each group will design a community, develop laws for their community, and decide on ways that the people in their community will work together and help each other. I am very excited to see their ideas come to life!

Hopefully you all received a blue sheet on Friday informing you about our field trip to Science World with the Grade Four class on March 7. If you haven't seen it yet, please look in the front pocket of your child's agenda book. We will need a few parent volunteers. Please note that we are unable to accommodate parent volunteers on the school bus, so if you would like to help supervise this field trip, you will have to meet us at Science World.

I will be attending a conference out of town from Thursday February 23 until Sunday February 26. If your child is not able to attend school, please e-mail Mrs. Ong at the school office.  Hello Grade One Families!

I hope that you all enjoyed your first day of the very extended long weekend! Thank-you for your commitment to bringing your children to school during the snowstorms earlier this week. Hopefully we didn't lose too many gloves and mittens! If your child is missing something please check the Lost & Found in the brown cabinet by the school office.

All of the students who have not yet read at a school Assembly this year were offered the opportunity to have a speaking part in the Assembly on February 17. Science Workshop

 Hello Grade One Families!

We had such a fun workshop this morning with Vivian from "High Touch High Tech"! We learned about many properties of light and sound. The students had a great time using flashlights, slinkies, and sound boxes to explore light and sound. They were so attentive and enthusiastic! Everyone got to make an "ultraviolet tester" in a testtube and I'm sure they will enjoy telling you all about it!

If you are receiving this message then it means that the blog is up and running again. Yeah!

 Have a great day!

Week of January 16 - 20

 Hello Grade One Families!

I hope that you are all enjoying a lovely weekend!

It looks like the cold, snowy weather is over for now and we are moving into a very rainy week! We have done our best to make sure that the Grade Ones have gone home with the same gloves, hats etc. that they brought to school, however if your child is missing something please note that the school Lost & Found has been moved to the brown cabinet by the school office.

This week we will begin a new drop-off/pick-up procedure to accommodate the parish building project. It is very important that everyone follows the instructions sent out by Mrs. Moorehead. At the end of the day all of the Grade One students will be in the covered area for pick-up as noted by Mrs. Moorehead in the e-mails that were send last week and this afternoon. If there is any change to your child's pick-up routine please communicate it to them and try to e-mail me by 8:00am in the morning, as I do not have many chances to check e-mail during the day. Thank-you in advance for your patience and cooperation!

Grade One Sharing

 Hello Grade One Families!

Tomorrow, Wednesday January 11, your child will bring home their notebook to begin their weekly sharing homework. It is a wonderful opportunity for you to help your child develop their writing skills, for your child to develop their oral language skills, and for the children to learn more about each other.  Please note the following information about sharing in Grade One:

  • each week students have an opportunity to share something special from home
  • it can be a toy, something that they have made or a picture of something they have made, something that belongs to them (such as a bike), or a special event
  • after your child has chosen what they will share, they will write four sentences about it in a notebook that they will bring home (the students must do the printing and parents please help with the sentence structure, neatness, spelling, punctuation, and use of upper and lower case letters)
  • the notebook is entitled "My Favourite Things" and contains the instructions and an example
  • each child has an assigned day and you can find your child's assigned day on the inside page of the notebook (we will begin on Monday January 16)
  • on their assigned day, students bring their completed notebook and the item for sharing to school
  • the shared item will come home on the same day and the notebook will come home the next day so that your child can write about their next sharing item
  • we will do our best to keep sharing items safe, however valuables should never be brought to school (please send a photo instead)
  • if you are worried about forgetting the notebook or sharing item on the assigned day, please send it the day before

We are all really looking forward to seeing the items that the students choose to share and I know that they having been eagerly awaiting sharing time!

After you have received the notebook tomorrow, if you have any further questions, please e-mail me at nkelly@stpaulschool.ca

 Thank-you!
