Grade 1's blog

Week of September 11 - 15

 Hello Grade One Families!

Wow! The first week of school just flew by! I think that the students in Grade One did an amazing job of transitioning to the new routines of Grade One. They are locker experts now!  The students confidently changed into their PE strip and found the correct spot to write in their agenda book. This week I look forward to introducing them to a few more routines and beginning our units of study for this month.

This month in Grade One we will focus on the unit, "We Belong to Our School Community" including collecting data about classmates, writing sentences about school and the data we collect, talking about how we can have a happy classroom, and learning about our feelings and the feelings of others. We will also begin a study of apples and cranberries as we learn about local plants. Over the next couple of weeks the students will "show what they know" about sounds, spelling and oral reading so that we can begin to form smaller learning groups.

This week the extra-curricular activities will begin for the students in Grades 2 - 7. If you have an older child participating in either volleyball or cross-country, please arrange for 3:00pm pick-up for your child in Grade 1 as we do not provide supervision for younger siblings during extra-curricular practices. Thank-you!

Please reserve the evening of Tuesday September 19 so that you can join us for our annual Meet the Teacher Night beginning at 7:00pm. I look forward to seeing you there!

Welcome to Grade One!

 Hello Grade One Families!

Welcome to a new school year! As I said in my welcome letter sent earlier this week, I am very much looking forward to working with both the children and their families in this class to have a wonderful year together. We will work this year to help the students develop a deeper understanding of God, others and themselves. We will celebrate the joy of accomplishments, and recognize that persevering through challenges and mistakes is an important way to help our brains to grow. So let's begin!

Thank-you to everyone who responded to my request to let me know that you received the welcome e-mail. It is important for me to know that everyone is included in my class e-mail group so that you do not miss updates throughout the year. If you received the e-mail please let me know as soon as possible. If you did not receive it, please also let me know. Thank-you!

  • students will need to wear their PE strip underneath the school uniform today because they will have their first PE class with Mr. Kelly
  • dismissal is at 3:00pm

There will not be any homework this week; however, it is often helpful for the children to have practice at home taking off their outer school uniform to have their PE strip underneath and practice putting the uniform back on, on top of the PE strip. They are expected to do this independently at school. This also applies to changing from uniform shoes to PE shoes. Please only send shoes with laces if your child is completely independent when tying laces. Thank-you!

If you have any questions or concerns please e-mail me at nkelly@stpaulschool.ca.

Enjoy the rest of the long weekend!

 See you on Tuesday!
