Grade 1's blog

Week of October 31 - November 4

 Hello Grade One Families!

The air in Grade One was sizzling with excitement on Friday in anticipation of Halloween! The students are very excited to share their costumes with their classmates. Please read the e-mails from Mrs. Moorehead regarding the guidelines for costumes at school. I am looking forward to an extra-special day in Grade One on Monday.

The students worked very hard this week completing their work for the September/October units. They will be bringing home the math project to share with you. I will include a letter explaining the process that each child went through to complete their assignment. A lot of learning, effort and independence went into the project, and they should all be very proud! Their chosen reward was no homework for the weekend!

The apple book is making its way through the families in the class. Thank-you for remembering to return it the next day! It will continue to be sent home over the next few weeks.

Week of October 24 - 28

 Hello Grade One Families!

Welcome to a new week! This week the students will be finishing the units "We Belong to Our School Community" and "Fall is a Beautiful Season". They have started planning their math projects and all have interesting questions to ask their classmates about various "favourite things".  The students will spend time this week finishing their plan, collecting the data from their classmates, summarizing it on a graph, and writing about what they found out. Next week, your child will bring home their completed project to share with you.

As part of our "Fall is a Beautiful Season" unit, we learned more about apples. One of the Grade One families recently attended the Apple Festival at the UBC Botanical Gardens. They bought a book about different types of apples and have lent it to the class. Many of the students would like to bring the book home to share with you. When your child brings the book home, please look at it together that evening and return it the next morning. Thank-you!

Please note the following information about this week:

 Monday October 24

  • photo order due ~ either online or submitted to the school
  • PE class
  • hot lunch for those who ordered

 Tuesday October 25

  • 12:15pm - 12:45pm Primary Choir in the Music Room ~ all Grade One students are invited to join the choir, but please note that it is not mandatory

 Looking Ahead:

  • Halloween is coming! Please read the October 21 e-mail from Mrs. Moorehead for costume guidelines. Also, if you are planning to send treats for the class, please make sure that they are individually wrapped, there are 31 of them, and they are nut and sesame free. I have purchased a large treat bag for each student to collect their goodies so there is no need to send an extra bag from home. There will be no agenda book or home reading coming home on this day.
  • Photo retakes are on November 15. If your child needs to have a retake, you may send in the photo proof envelope anytime prior to this date and I will keep it in the classroom. Please make sure that it is clearly indicated on the envelope that a retake is requested.

Week of October 17 - 21

 Hello Grade One Families!

I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend! Last Friday was certainly a fun day to play outside! We saw swaying trees, leaves flying through the air, and answered the question, "Can the wind move a Grade One student?" ~ yes it can! The students also collected many colourful leaves for their Look and See station this week. It brought me so much joy to see their big smiles. I would also like to congratulate the students for their hard work in leading the Assembly with the Grade 4 class.

When I handed out the home reading books on Friday, I explained to the students that they do need to read their book every night, but that it may take more than one evening to complete the full assignment so they can keep their book at home for more than one night. Please keep that in mind this week and e-mail me if you have any questions.

 Please note the following reminders:

Week of September 12 - 16

 Hello Grade One Families!

The first week of school just flew by! The Grade One students did an amazing job of practicing new routines and showing me how eager they are to share what they know and learn new things. Each day brought new experiences and helped us all to get to know each other better. I am looking forward to a wonderful year of exploring the curriculum with your children.

The students did a great job of changing for PE class on Friday. Perhaps a little practice with buttons might be helpful in leading to complete independent success. I will set up a practice station for buttoning in the classroom and would appreciate it if you could practice at home as well. Please ask your child how they feel they did with their changing and practice accordingly.

We have started our first unit of the school year: I Belong to My School Community. The students will be collecting and graphing data about each other, writing sentences about what they have discovered, giving examples of how we appreciate and welcome each other, and practicing new and familiar classroom and school routines. This week we will begin another unit about local plants such as blueberries, cranberries and pumpkins.

Please note the following for this week:
