Grade 2's blog

MARCH 6 - 13

Hello Grade Two Families,

We've had a very prayerful start to the season of Lent. The children thought about the ways in which they can spend the next 40 days through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. This Lent, we have HoBo theme to guide us. HoBo stands for Homeward Bound; reminding us that we want to spend our time on Earth being like Jesus so we can one day join him in heaven. Over the next 40 days, your child might come home with an extra promise or sacrifice they offered to do during the season of Lent. As they complete it, it gets added to a Lenten chain we have in the classroom.

We wish Andre, Anselm, Brando, Colin, Gabriella, Kelly, Matthew, Tristan and Stella all the best as they represent St. Paul School at the Tri-School Speech Arts festival on Wednesday. Everyone did a great job sharing their poems and Bible readings over the past few weeks. Thank you to the parents for working with your child and the continued support!

FEBRUARY 27 -MARCH 3

Dear Grade Two Families,

CONGRATULATIONS!! You have completed the First Communion program! I'm sure you are immensely proud of your children as they prayerfully and beautifully received Jesus last Saturday. It was such a joyful and heart-warming moment to hear all their little voices sing "I Thank My God" and lift their voices up to God. I was certainly thinking of all of you during that meditation song. This would not have been possible without your support and cooperation, so thank you very much for all that you do!! :)

In many ways, it is very fitting that Lent comes right after our theme of Going Forth to Make the World a Better Place. The season of Lent calls us to think about the ways that we can be more like Jesus in our words and actions - the same things that the end of the Mass and the Communion program ask us to do! Students are encouraged to attend morning Mass at 8:15 am during Lent. They are invited to sit with the rest of the school in the front pews. I look forward to seeing you and your family at those Masses.

FEBRUARY 13-17

Hi Grade Two Families,

I hope you've been enjoying your extended long weekend with your families! It is wonderful to see the weather get into double digits with the sun shining! This week, we started reading this ginormous book full of why questions. I believe there are close to 1,111 questions! Each day, we will ask a different why question and the students will have the rest of the day to think about it, read about it in a book, or maybe even ask their knowledgeable parents. The next day, they will come back and share their different thoughts and ideas before reading what the book has to say. This week, we asked a lot of different questions about our fingers. We've gotten some really intellectual and creative guesses. We even did an experiment on what our life would be like without thumbs. Needless to say, trying to button up all the buttons in their uniform was difficult without thumbs. Stay tuned for more questions!

Pictures of Landforms

Hi Grade Two Families,

Hope you have been able to enjoy the winter wonderland we have!

As part of our Social Studies unit, the Grade Two class has been studying landforms! We read the definitions of landforms, drew pictures, played games, read books, made some art, and even ate landforms over the past several weeks. As we were going through the landforms, so many of them were sharing stories about their trips to different landforms. We also realized we haven't looked at photos of landforms yet. While the class suggested looking them up in Google and asking Siri, they also realized that they might have pictures at home. This is where we need your help! :) Please email in or send in a photo of your child, or your family at a landform by Tuesday, February 14. It would be great if you could take the time to go through the photo album with your child to see if they can identify the landform/s and have you guiding them along the way. This also ties in really nicely with our First Communion theme of Giving Thanks for Creation. You can engage in conversation about all the good gifts God has given us in creation. Once you send in the photo, we'll share it with the rest of the class and try to guess where you are.

Below is a list of some of the landforms we have been discussing. If you have a photo of a landform that isn't on the list, please send it in anyway - we would love to see it!

  • mountains
  • hills
  • plains
  • island
  • volcano
  • valley
  • coast
  • peninsula
  • ocean
  • pond
  • lake
  • bay
  • river
  • stream
  • waterfall
  • iceberg

Thank you very much for all your help! I can't wait to see all the wonderful photos!

God bless,

Miss Ramirez

The students got to make catapults, move pop cans using ballons and much more. Forces are fun!

JANUARY 30 - FEBRUARY 3

Dear Grade Two Families,

It was so wonderful seeing many of you on our field trip and at our Feast Day celebration! We had beautiful and moving conversations about St. Paul and what he has done for the Catholics back then and how it continues to impact us today. We read about and discussed the life of St. Paul, and as we were talking about his death, a student remarked that he was sad becuase St. Paul was defeated. While many in the class also said they felt sad, some of their peers pointed out that St. Paul wasn't defeated at all. Instead, he won because he was with God in heaven and helped bring many people to Jesus. Their childlike faith never ceases to inspire and amaze, and is blessing to witness in the classroom!

Changes to Tomorrow

Hi Grade Two Families,

Thank you very much to all the parents who came and helped out with driving and supervising the field trip! It is wonderful to be a part of such a supportive school community.

Because of the Feast Day celebrations tomorrow, there will be some changes to the day. We will not be having PE, and the Spelling Check In will be moved to next week Wednesday. This means they will not get a new Spelling List this week. Instead of PE and Spelling, we'll be spending time together by sharing a meal and watching some fun entertainment.

Thank you for understanding! I hope to see you tomorrow at the Feast Day Celebrations!

God bless,

Miss Ramirez :)

JANUARY 23-27

Dear Grade Two Families,

We had jam-packed week getting a chance to play with our cars while learning more about force and friction, going through the Gold Book and starting our town for Social Studies. We've started learning about landforms, and they even got to make a few during their French class.  Our Friday, we received a very exciting letter from one of the seminarians we pray for as a class. There are three seminarians that we pray for, and we wrote letters to them before the Christmas break. The students pray for them every single day (usually coupled with hopes that they write back), so we were thrilled that we heard back from them. The children were very surprised to hear that he's super tall, and were touched to know that he is praying for the Grade Two class and their First Communion preparation.

Traffic Updates:

Thank you for your patience and understanding with the new drop off and pick up procedures. The children were very excited about it the first Monday. We have quite enjoyed seeing each other in the lot, even before getting into the classroom. If you do not have a child in Kindergarten or Grade One, I encourage all of you to use the back lot as it will become the norm soon. Please continue to read Mrs. Moorehead's emails to stay up-to-date with all the updates and changes.

 Hi Grade Two Families,

Happy Friday!
