Grade 2's blog

JANUARY 30 - FEBRUARY 3

Dear Grade Two Families,

It was so wonderful seeing many of you on our field trip and at our Feast Day celebration! We had beautiful and moving conversations about St. Paul and what he has done for the Catholics back then and how it continues to impact us today. We read about and discussed the life of St. Paul, and as we were talking about his death, a student remarked that he was sad becuase St. Paul was defeated. While many in the class also said they felt sad, some of their peers pointed out that St. Paul wasn't defeated at all. Instead, he won because he was with God in heaven and helped bring many people to Jesus. Their childlike faith never ceases to inspire and amaze, and is blessing to witness in the classroom!

Changes to Tomorrow

Hi Grade Two Families,

Thank you very much to all the parents who came and helped out with driving and supervising the field trip! It is wonderful to be a part of such a supportive school community.

Because of the Feast Day celebrations tomorrow, there will be some changes to the day. We will not be having PE, and the Spelling Check In will be moved to next week Wednesday. This means they will not get a new Spelling List this week. Instead of PE and Spelling, we'll be spending time together by sharing a meal and watching some fun entertainment.

Thank you for understanding! I hope to see you tomorrow at the Feast Day Celebrations!

God bless,

Miss Ramirez :)

JANUARY 23-27

Dear Grade Two Families,

We had jam-packed week getting a chance to play with our cars while learning more about force and friction, going through the Gold Book and starting our town for Social Studies. We've started learning about landforms, and they even got to make a few during their French class.  Our Friday, we received a very exciting letter from one of the seminarians we pray for as a class. There are three seminarians that we pray for, and we wrote letters to them before the Christmas break. The students pray for them every single day (usually coupled with hopes that they write back), so we were thrilled that we heard back from them. The children were very surprised to hear that he's super tall, and were touched to know that he is praying for the Grade Two class and their First Communion preparation.

Traffic Updates:

Thank you for your patience and understanding with the new drop off and pick up procedures. The children were very excited about it the first Monday. We have quite enjoyed seeing each other in the lot, even before getting into the classroom. If you do not have a child in Kindergarten or Grade One, I encourage all of you to use the back lot as it will become the norm soon. Please continue to read Mrs. Moorehead's emails to stay up-to-date with all the updates and changes.

Books!

 Hi Grade Two Families,

Happy Friday!

We've been clearing out some of our shelves and have some extra books. Today, your child will have an opportunity to look at these books and select the ones that interest them. They get to take these books home and treasure them forever! :)

Happy Reading!

Miss Ramirez

JANUARY 16-19

Hi Grade Two Families,

January has been bringing lots of exciting new things in the classroom. Other than First Communion, we're building a town for Social Studies and carrying along with force and motion unit in Science. You may have heard about catapulting marshmallows across the hallway last week. The children are asked to bring a small toy car on Monday for some fun experiments happening this week and next. As soon as I mentioned it on Friday, they were buzzing with excitement. Please make sure that the car is labelled with your child's name, and that it is not too big and not valuable. If your child does not have a toy car, they will be provided with one. Some were kind enough to offer to bring two for their friends who don't have any and they are certainly more than welcome to do so.

Traffic Changes:

As Mrs. Moorehead mentioned in her email, traffic changes are happening at our parish starting on Monday. Unless your child is going home with someone in Kindergarten or Grade 1, please use the back parking lot for drop off and pick up. It is very important your child knows where they will be picked up after school every day. Before we leave the classroom, the class will split up into their pick up locations and be brought there by an adult, so please make sure they know. We will likely be waiting outside in an uncovered during pick up, so please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Please do not call the office or send an email to pass on the information to your child. I am unoften unable to read my email until after school so by then it might be too late. I appreciate your patience and understanding as we go through this new phase together.

Hi Grade Two Families,

It was like a great big reunion when the class got to see each other again last Monday. From the stories the children have shared, it sounds like you all had a wonderful holiday break. It has been a beautiful start to 2017 with the First Communion Program up and running. It was very moving (not just myself and for you I'm sure), but for also members of our parish to witness your children declare that they would like to receive Jesus. They are very blessed to have supportive families behind them. We are definitely in the midst of exciting and transformative times. One down, eight more weeks to go! DECEMBER 5-9

Hi Grade Two Families,

We had quite the happening week. We started Monday off with a High Touch, High Tech science workshop to wrap up our unit on matter. The children got to see and participate in different experiments. They got to see a different demonstration of what molecules will look like, see some chemical reactions and make oobleck to take home. Their faces light up as all the changes were happening before their eyes. Throughout the week, we've been talking about the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the steps involved. Your child took home a copy of the Act of Contrition and a mini-booklet with all the steps. Please go over these with your child to help them feel comfortable and ready to receive the sacrament in two weeks time. The class is very eager to partake in the sacrament - so much so that it is the only future date revealed on our calendar. Not even Christmas is revealed! On top of all of this, we've also been learning about Advent and how we can prepare our hearts for Jesus' coming. They made a beautiful Advent calendar. Each student wrote an act of kindness that we as a class all have to do together. So far it's been going great! It's also incredibly hard to believe there are only two more weeks of school!

Here are the reminders for the week:

NOV. 28 - DEC. 2

Hi Grade 2 Families,

It was lovely to see all of you last Friday to talk about your wonderful children. It's hard to believe Term 1 is over and we're slowly gearing into 2017! We had a jam-packed week with different presentations and school events. A highlight this week was going to the church to take a look at the confessionals. Father Mark gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the rooms in the confessional and we got a great visual as to what it will look like on the actual day. I'm excited to share some of what we talked about, and the main take away for the students this Wednesday at our Parent Reconciliation Meeting. This week, we'll be learning lots about the Advent season and how we can prepare ourselves for the Lord.
