Week of November 6 - 10

  Hello Grade One Families!

It was a busy and exciting week in Grade One! We started the week by moving to new home tables, celebrated Halloween on Tuesday, had a visit with Fr. Mark to learn about All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, and ended the week with the Assembly and Grade 7 vs. Staff volleyball game! At the Walkathon Celebration Assembly we found out that the families raised over $63,000 this year! Thank-you for your effort and commitment to our school!

In the upcoming week we will begin many new units of study. In Religion we will be learning about the saints, peace and being of service to others. Toward the end of the month we will be discussing the liturgical year and preparing for the season of Advent (a personal favourite of mine!). In math we will focus on number concepts such as odd and even numbers, composing and decomposing numbers into tens and ones, and skip counting. As I mentioned to many of you at the conferences, the students will be working on extending their writing and using simple writing conventions (upper case at the beginning, finger spacing, and punctuation at the end) with a writing partner or small group this month. We will continue the ReadWell program for oral reading and work on sequencing story events for reading comprehension. In social studies and oral language, the students will be sharing stories about their family and learning about how our families are the same and different. Patterns in the sky and on Earth will be the focus in science as we work through the unit, Patterns Make the World Beautiful
